1.5 Templates

Once upon a time.... in a galaxy far far away the forums used to be setup different. I remember there used to be a sticky topic when joomla 1.5 was released to discuss the templates people wanted converted to 1.5....... does this thread still exist? If not, are there any prospects of having the rest of your wonderful templates converted?

I was looking at Nitro and was thinking how nice it would be for a new site... but then when I went to download it I noticed that it was 1.0.x only. I am happy with my membership to the club but it is frustrating when I cant use the templates offered in the club. Any plans for the rest to be converted? 1.5 has been out for a long time now.

Thanks for your reply in advance.

Hi Nryan

Actually the plan is to convert all the old templates to themelets so they will work with Morph, thus giving you substantially more control over the older templates.
The guys have been basically working on Morph development 10 hours a day for the past year. Now that we are finally to the point of it being stable and the code being locked, they are moving towards getting some themelets built.
The course of action is to basically do one new themelet, and one old template conversion, wash, rinse repeat.

Well that is nice, but what about template for people who don't want to use morph? No offense, it seems promising but the first time I tried it I spent crazy amounts of hours and still could not figure out how ot use it correctly. I understand it is powerful don't get me wrong - but there is something to be said for installing a template and spending 10 minutes configuring it and then poof its working.

Safe to say that from now on the only templates JJ will be working on are for morph so if I don't like morph then...... oh noes

I have deliberately stayed away from using Morph much over the past year. I wanted to try and be as much of a outside party as possible when issues came up. I also wanted to try to be able to judge if it was too complicated or the amount of learning it would require. Taking this stance has helped me be a outsider looking in as much as possible
Speaking for myself, Morph has a pretty straightforward feel to it, with everything layed out well. If one really wants to dig in, and do something crazy or elaborate, it has that too, but you need to get deeper into the features. In reality, yes, Morph has a learning curve to it, but in the same way Joomla or many other components do.

Everybody installs Joomla and templates differently and expects different things. I have never been able to install Joomla, pop a template on it, and be all done without doing a rather large chunk of prep work. Morph has helped me do a site recently, and while I grumbled a lot in the begining, it has saved me countless hours once I learned the documentation and how it works....and here comes the cheesy comment......how it works to make my job easier.

I suppose it's possible Morph is not for everyone, but not any more then Joomla or Wordpress or Magento.

Moving forward all of our work will be built on top of Morph via themelets. This is so we can build faster, more efficiently, and provide the best possible service and feature set to our clients. To revert back to building standard templates would be nothing more then a gross disservice to our clients, and the Joomla community.

Ok well I will give morph another try in a month or two. Granted I got "in the mood" to spend hours learning it and kept getting stuck with bugs so maybe it isnt as bad as I remember it just seems disapointing to not have 1.5 templates especially when the templates are shown to you like "oh look at me you know you want to download me - but cant".

I wish there was just a code generator to search and replace the changes to auto convert templates... there are a few you have that I want to use but I could never go back to joomla 1.0 now... I will see what I can do

Thanks Matt

To be blunt, we wish there was too, but thats why it has taken so long. Not to mention some of the older templates use technology or code that we have migrated away from, or in many cases have found more effective ways to do it.

When we port over the older templates to themelets we can tackle all of these issues and greatly improve them all at once. It's a slow road, but we are a lot farther down that road now, then we where 6 months ago. :)
