Ergonomics - it's important but why does it have to be soooo uncomfortable?
Posted by: Munaiba Khan in thoughts May 06, 2008
We've all seen the diagrams and read the instructions - you know the sort of thing "eyes at the level of the top of the screen, forearms relaxed" etc., etc. But do we do it? No! At least I don't and I don't really know anyone who does. Do you?
Why does one size have to fit all when it comes to ergonomics?
I don't mean that the measurements are the same for everyone but why do they assume that same position is comfortable for everyone? And why do your eyes have to be at the level of the top of the screen when everyone knows that the easy way to read as you scroll is to read the bottom line of the page?
How many hours do you spend in front of your PC or Mac?
If you're anything like me then it's at least 8 hours a day and possibly more. That means that more than likely we are doing ourselves damage. The problem is that sitting in a chair with your feet flat on the floor is uncomfortable. And have you noticed that desks with keyboard drawers are not wide enough to house a mouse as well? Which means you have to lean forward to use the mouse. If you use a laptop on your lap then you'll put your neck out. Too many clicks of the mouse and tendonitis will get you. And the more hours you spend the more you'll suffer.
Can sitting ergonomically stifle creativity?
When I sit properly - ergonomically - I feel so uncomfortable and stiff and unnatural that my creativity just shrivels. And if I don't... Well I have the physio and acupuncture bills to attest to the out-of-whack C4 vertbra, the tendonitis, muscle spasms and more. There has to be a solution.
It's not just "artists" who suffer for their art
We techies, copywriters, web designers and developers suffer too. Sore fingers, shoulders, necks and more... All for our art; the art of making the web a cooler place to browse. Spare us as thought as you sit with your eyes at the level of the top of the screen. And if you're an ergonomic work station designer then please start thinking outside the cubicle!
